May 1, 2019 - Leadership: "3 Things that May Be True if People Are Constantly Complaining to You"

This is a different kind of post for me. But the concepts are great, whether you are part of a church staff or in any other type of group, be it work, family, social, etc.

When people come to me on behalf of someone else, I try to encourage them to shut down the conversation with the person, telling them that it would be best to take the concern to the person who can do something about it. ðŸ™‚

A great perspective!!

April 30, 2019 - Pleasing God or Trusting God?

This is so good. Important to know whether we are:
“Pleasing God or Trusting God?
If you are striving to “please God,” there are a bunch of voices in your head telling you things like this: I should be more sold out for God. I should care more. I need to get on fire. I must buck up, shape up, and tighten up. Yes, it sounds like the mantra of good intentions and spiritual humility. But…
There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. (Proverbs 16:25)
Thankfully, God has provided another route. But we must back up to the intersection where we made the choice to go with the religious crowd in an attempt to please God by our own self effort. At this intersection, another sign points down a different road. It says, “Trusting God.”
This road is definitely less worn than the other one, and it seems illogical. If you are uncomfortable with trusting God rather than pleasing God, a bunch of other voices in your head are saying things like this: When do I get to do something for God? Where's the part where I get to prove my sincerity? Where are my guidelines? Where do I get to give God my best?
If you overcome those voices and walk this path, you come to another door which says, “Living Out Who God says I Am.” The doorknob reads, “Humility.” It’s a room full of people who are obviously imperfect, full of compromise and struggle—yet they are authentic. They are both laughing and crying—yet underneath any expression is a genuine joy.
Yeah, it’s not nearly as orderly and polished as the room filled with those who are trying in their own effort to “please God.” But there is something real about them… and there is a peace that surpasses all comprehension around them.
Yes, this group knows who they are in Christ, and they are resting in what He has done for them.
As Bruce McNichol says, “Welcome to the room of Grace!” - Pete Briscoe

April 28, 2019 - "Build My Life" - Housefires

Worthy of every song we could ever sing.
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring.
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe.
We live for you.
Jesus the name above every other name.
Jesus the only one who could save.
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe.
We live for you.
Oh we live for you.
Holy there is no one like you
There is none besides you
Open up my eyes in wonder
Show me who you are and fill me
With your heart and lead me
In love to those around me.
And I will build my life upon your love it is a firm foundation.
And I will put my trust in you alone and I will not be shaken.

April 27, 2019 - Baby Girl Baier

Our daughter posted earlier today about their baby girl that we were supposed to welcome this week. In late November, she went to the doctor and there was no heartbeat. Even though we never got to hold our sweet granddaughter on this side of heaven, we know that we WILL see her face and hold her one day. I have listened to this song so many times since then; it makes me cry but it speaks so eloquently of the hope that conquers death. Earth is so temporary - this is not our home!

WITH HOPE
This is not at all
How we thought it was supposed to be
We had so many plans for you
We had so many dreams
And now you've gone away
And left us with the memories of your smile
And nothing we can say
And nothing we can do
Can take away the pain
The pain of losing you, but...
We can cry with hope
We can say goodbye with hope
'Cause we know our goodbye is not the end, oh no
And we can grieve with hope
'Cause we believe with hope
There's a place where we'll see your face again
We'll see your face again
And never have I known
Anything so hard to understand
And never have I questioned more
The wisdom of God's plan
But through the cloud of tears
I see the Father's smile and say well done
And I imagine you
Where you wanted most to be
Seeing all your dreams come true
'Cause now you're home
And now you're free, and ...
We have this hope as an anchor
'Cause we believe that everything
God promised us is true, so...
We wait with hope
And we ache with hope
We hold on with hope
We let go with hope

April 26, 2019 - MBC and Costs

This is a different post than what I normally share - but something that is absolutely on my mind!

In my case - I take an oral chemo that costs around $12,000 per month (for 21 pills). I also have an injection for bone metastasis that is over $5,000 a month. I have an eye injection for leaky blood vessels that is over $4,000 every four weeks. That is three medications - not counting scans, doctors visits, etc. I just checked and my medical bills for this year are already over $100,000, and they were last year as well. I am SO thankful for great medical insurance and for medical providers that do everything they can to find discounts and take away the burden of worrying about this stuff - but it's hard not to think about it.
Here's a little bit of the article the resonated with me!

"People living with metastatic cancer could use some guidance even on "seemingly irrelevant health decisions," they point out. For example, "Should we forgo routine prevention and screening for our other medical conditions? Is it pointless to be taking a statin when you don't even know if you should take a chance on purchasing airline tickets for a summer vacation? If you're living with metastatic cancer, even buying light bulbs can make you wonder whether you need ones that will last longer than you will." - Persons Living with Incurable Cancer a Growing, Negllected Group; Medscape.Com

April 25, 2019 - Waiting

“What if we shouldn’t belittle waiting? What if there’s holy power in waiting? What if waiting is not what we do while we grow, but it’s the soil God uses so we grow.” - Craig Groeschel

“And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.” ‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Romans‬ ‭12:12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

April 22, 2019 - JOY

I was looking around my house today and thinking about how much words matter. We don’t even realize how much negative stuff we are around each day - the news, television, social media, etc. But as I looked at so many “word art” items in my house, it confirms what I already know.

What we think about and what we focus on makes a huge difference.

So many people have given me things related to JOY, and I think about it every day. God knew, back in January 2015 when I was losing my hair from chemo, that I would NEED to understand the importance of deciding how to think. And I don’t do it in a vacuum - choosing JOY, choosing to lean in and listen to what God is saying through His word and through music and prayer - it makes all the difference in dealing with circumstances I can’t change. It makes all the difference in the world!

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” James‬ ‭1:2-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬
