August 15, 2018

I love the scriptures and the illustration below. It’s easy, in hindsight, to criticize Peter’s fear - but at least he had the courage to step out of the boat! Each of us are faced with “get out of the boat” situations. And in those moments - the real-life, “water’s over my head and I can’t swim” times in our lives, we have the privilege of putting everything we have learned and know and believe, to the test.
The question isn’t, can Jesus save us from the situation that is causing us fear. The real question is, do we TRUST Him with whatever the outcome may be? If He doesn’t heal, doesn’t prevent the accident, doesn’t make the happy ending we wanted - do we still trust His goodness?
Once we can answer that question with a confident YES, fear is truly gone. Satan is defeated and powerless. We have a freedom that only comes from the confident assurance that God is in control of every detail of our lives and that He is good!  🙂
“Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” Matthew‬ ‭14:29-31‬ ‭NLT‬‬
“We all know that it’s more comfortable back in the shallows. It’s easier to believe that we’re going to survive when we’re sitting on the solid planks of the boat. But if we’re called to step away from the edge, to walk out where the blue below us is darker, out where the wind is rising, trust becomes a more difficult matter. We grow fearful. We begin to sink. But we have been called to do the impossible, to jump into the deep end, and to step out of the boat in the midst of the sea. So, go we must.” - Hannah Grieser, Fear and the Goodness of God

“People who understand that failure is an event and never a person are the ones who go on to do something great.” Fight Fear - You Version
Most of the time, I feel pretty positive and upbeat about what’s going on around us (finding out that my cancer has recurred and determining a treatment plan). I absolutely know that God has my days numbered, that this isn’t s surprise to Him, and that I can trust Him!
But there are times when I have some very strong emotions. Like serious irritation at the metastatic breast cancer medicine commercials!!  🙂 They play happy music and show video of women doing amazing things while the voiceover talks about a horrible list of side effects that almost sound worse than the disease. And I have to fight feeling as if I somehow failed because cancer is back. Most people are in remission longer than me before a recurrence. And it’s hard to see those stupid cancer med commercials with grandmas making cookies and crocheting when you can’t get out of bed because your head and body hurt too much to do that. To feel like you’ve failed at doing cancer... well, it may sound crazy, but I have experienced that feeling. 🙂
That is only one of many things that I can feel I’ve failed at. But God doesn’t see it that way. I’m so glad that He isn’t angered by our behavior. He does have a plan - and He knows that life is difficult. When I start to feel discouraged about cancer, He brings to mind the times before we knew that my cancer was back. I heard God say, on multiple occasions, that the cancer journey wasn’t over, that it wasn’t a punishment; and that He knew I could be trusted to relay a message about choosing joy, no matter what life sends our way. He loves us that much - and when we are His children, He doesn’t spend time keeping track of all the times we fail.
His grace is enough for whatever we face. He can be trusted. And I will continue to choose joy.  🙂
“Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭12:9-10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When you've done everything you can do, that's when God will step in and do what you can't do.

“Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.” Proverbs 4:23-27 MSG

August 11, 2018

“Most of us can categorize our lives in both positive and negative ways. You could write a glowing list of the positives in your life, and you could then write a list of sobering negatives. Both lists are true, but the focus of each list is different . . . Which list do you spend the majority of your time dwelling on?" - Linda Dillow
This quote is very true. We ALL have good things and tough things in our lives. Some people seem to focus on the difficulties in their lives, replaying that script over and over in every conversation they have. Other people do the opposite. They focus on the good, looking for the ways that God has blessed them and the lessons they have learned along the way.
Metastatic cancer isn’t for sissies. Knowing I have a disease that can be treated but not cured, is challenging. We absolutely believe - and know - that God can do all things, and that He alone numbered my days before I was even born. But we don’t know what the ending looks like - only God does.
God has an opinion on which way is the “better” way to live with regard to focusing on the negatives or positives. In this season, when we are facing some very difficult days, I see more than ever the value in Philippians 4:8. Basically, the short version of this verse could easily be “choose joy.” And that is good advice! We can’t control our circumstances but we can always control our response!!
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Philippians‬ ‭4:8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

August 9th is our wedding anniversary!! This year, our anniversary will start with one more scan before we head for home. Not necessarily what we had expected, but it’s not a surprise to God. 🙂 And it will be so great to sleep at our house!!
I’m so thankful for you, Tony. For your wisdom and humor and kindness and love - love for God, love for our family and for the people in our life. And I know that God will be with us each step of the way as we start this journey to fight cancer again!
We had a great meetings with our oncology team and feel like we are clear on what we are dealing with and how it will be treated. I’ll be taking two oral meds; I started one tonight and will start the other next week. Please be praying for stabilization/regression of the metastatic activity, and that side effects are managed in a way that allows us to continue to enjoy our life together. 🙂 We appreciate all the prayers for us this week! We are so blessed, and we will continue to CHOOSE JOY!!
"The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.” Zephaniah‬ ‭3:17‬ ‭NASB‬‬

We have our appointment to get the second opinion on diagnosis and recommended treatment plan today at 9:30am Memphis time. So many emotions as we prepare for this meeting. We know that God is here with us. I’ve had “Holy Ground” on repeat this morning. Love these words!
Chains fall
Fear bow
Here, now
Jesus, you change everything
Lives healed
Hope found
Here, now
Jesus, you change everything
I am so thankful for praying family and friends, and for our Heavenly Father who loves us more than we could ever comprehend!!

“The One who breathes stars, breathes prayers for you... The One who made time, lives beyond time, controls all of time, uses all of His time to pray for you, because you are priceless to Him. Your prayer warrior is more than any warrior — He is the king of Kings and He has already won. Rest well. You aren't ever alone.” - Ann Voskamp

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” James‬ ‭1:2-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬
Love these verses. We know that God’s plans are perfect!!

August 2, 2018 - Deep Thoughts :)

“Suffering isn’t an obstacle to being used by God. It is an opportunity to be used like never before.” - Levi Lusko
Today we received confirmation of what our doctor told us two weeks ago. The FACTS are that cancer has metastasized into my lungs and lymph nodes. We are reviewing treatment plans and will continue to do that over the next week.
The TRUTH is that God is not surprised - these “new developments” aren’t new to Him at all. He has a plan - even in this - and we know that He will ultimately bring healing. Either miraculously, or by medicine, or by taking me home to Heaven one day. He knows best. The bodies we occupy are temporary dwellings for all of us!
Yesterday, when I was feeling afraid, God reminded me in so many ways that He is present. He took me through a recitation of all the lessons He has taught us over the last four years. One of the most important was this quote by Levi Lusko. And while I don’t feel that I am suffering right now, over the last four years, I have absolutely experienced feeling useless at times. Satan would try to make me believe that I had been sidelined from God’s purpose for me. To make me wonder if God was aware of my situation. But what I have found to be true, time and time again, is that God is using my circumstances for good and that we can continue to trust Him, and that this IS His purpose and plan for me.
God is very concerned about the details of each of our lives, and He wants us to lean into Him! It is my prayer that God uses this situation in our lives to show His Glory!

August 2, 2018 - Great Are You Lord

You give life, You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope, You restore
Every heart that is broken
Great are You, Lord
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only
And all the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing
Great are You, Lord
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

Yesterday, I felt nervous and worried. Feelings are so not-helpful sometimes! But when I would go back and read God’s Word, it brought a peace to my heart.
So many wonderful scriptures, words of encouragement and prayers on our behalf over the last few days. Thank you!!
From Mindy Boyd Baier
“I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” Psalms‬ ‭34:4‬ ‭HCSB‬‬
From Gladys Kiruga:
“Good people suffer many troubles, but the LORD saves them from them all;”. Psalms‬ ‭34:19‬ ‭GNB‬‬
From Alisha Williams:
“Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1Thessalonians‬ ‭5:16-18‬ ‭NLT‬
From Chasidy Crum’s devo - I love this perspective on facts and problems!!
“Have you discovered the difference between problems and facts? Problems are things we can do something about; we can solve problems. Facts are things we can do nothing about; therefore we do well not to worry about them. We apply energy only to those things we can change. We can feel peace and act with poise, because we no longer beat our heads against an unbreakable wall.”
And this scripture from Jackie Walton Bennett:
Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him.  He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.  Psalms 62:5-6 NLT

August 1, 2018 - 2 Corinthians 4:18 NLT

“So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

August 1, 2018 - "Do It Again", Elevation Worship

Walking around these walls
I thought by now they'd fall
But You have never failed me yet
Waiting for change to come
Knowing the battle's won
For You have never failed me yet
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I'm still in Your hands
This is my confidence,
You've never failed me yet
I know the night won't last
Your Word will come to pass
My heart will sing Your praise again
Jesus, You're still enough
Keep me within Your love
My heart will sing Your praise again
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I'm still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I'm still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed me yet
I've seen You move, come move the mountains
And I believe, I'll see You do it again
You made a way, where there was no way
And I believe, I'll see You do it again
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I'm still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed
Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I'm still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed me yet
And You never failed me yet
I never will forget

July 31, 2018 - Second post

Three years ago tonight, we had an early anniversary celebration with our family.
Three years later - God is still teaching us. The more turns in the road, the more grateful I am for the One who is guiding our future!
Here are excerpts of my FB post from that day:
Winding Road
Today has been a wonderful day! We got together for a delightful "early anniversary" dinner. It was delicious! Then we hung out on the Peabody roof for a little while as the sun was setting. The weather was perfect and the view was beautiful.
Earlier today, I had an appointment with the plastic surgeon. Follow-up surgeries are sometimes needed after reconstruction, and by the end of the appointment, we were making arrangements for surgery. That will be happening in early October. I'm not overly concerned, but another surgery and recovery in 2015 hadn't really been on my radar.
Monday, we head back to the eye doctor for an angiogram of my eye to see what's up.
A winding road. That's what this week has been. Things I LOVE and things unexpected. Life is like that. We do not always know what's around the next corner - but we are NEVER alone on this journey. As unexpected things have happened, God's peace and presence has increased. What used to feel like a roller coaster, now feels like a winding road. It is all about perspective!! And I intend to sit back and enjoy the view.
“There’s more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we’re hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we’re never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary—we can’t round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit!” Romans 5:3-5 MSG

July 31, 2018

Paul had an incredible attitude about the “what ifs” in his life. He had the mind-set of bring it on. The Pharisees couldn’t stand him, but they found his attitude made it impossible to stop him. They threw him in prison and he said, “That’s OK. Give me some parchment and ink. I’ll write some letters to the churches. I’ll write to them about how to have joy in all circumstances.”
They chained him to a prison guard and he said, “That’s OK. I’ll tell him about Jesus. As a matter-of-fact, I’ll bring his whole family to Christ!”
They threatened to kill him and he said, “That’s OK. I’ll get to go to heaven and be with Jesus. What could be better?”
Paul... wasn’t worried or concerned about his future. Paul was at peace with whatever happened on his faith journey because He trusted in the character and love of God. And with a faith like that, the natural consequence is to live bold. And that’s what we can do today! - Sharon Jaynes
“There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror! For fear brings with it the thought of punishment, and [so] he who is afraid has not reached the full maturity of love [is not yet grown into love’s complete perfection].” 1 John 4:18 AMPC

July 28, 2018

“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Deuteronomy‬ ‭31:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬
In this round of my cancer journey, we probably won’t be sharing a whole lot on FB about test results or treatment decisions. I do want to continue to share lessons that I’m learning along the way, because those lessons are true no matter what we may be dealing with.
In the last four years, as I’ve faced cancer and eye issues and chemo and too many surgeries to count, the biggest takeaway from my story is the realization of how much God loves me. The more I lean into Him for strength and guidance, the more I experience His peace. And I know that what is happening in my life right now isn’t a surprise to God. He has given me joy in some pretty difficult circumstances, and I know that He will continue to do that.
A few weeks before I found out that cancer may be back, I felt God saying to me, “This [cancer journey] isn’t over and it isn’t a punishment. I know I can trust you to walk this path in a way that glorifies me.” I hadn’t been worried about cancer coming back. I hadn’t thought that what I’d heard God saying would happen so quickly! But when the doctor told us the news, while I was absolutely surprised, I had the most incredible peace. Only God can give that kind of peace. A peace that says “I will never leave you.” A peace that says that He will never abandon us.
God is good, and He can be trusted with the details of our lives!

July 26, 2018

Our message last weekend at LF was so powerful - I’ve heard people say over and over that it was exactly what they needed for specific situations they are facing.
That is the power of the Bible - the anointed Word of God. Its words speak directly into our souls as we read and study them. Its truth is what keeps me focused as we move toward learning more about my health situation!
The quote below is from today’s devo; reading this in conjunction with our weekend message - wow!! In multiple ways and through multiple people, God is saying don’t quit, but persevere!
“Between any trial and the blessing that comes from that trial, there is a pathway we must walk — that pathway is perseverance. Perseverance means having an urgency, firmness, resolve, and consistency. And, while the joy of the blessing may seem a long way off, signposts or mile markers of joy line the way. These will help us persevere with resolve and consistency if we ‘consider’ them. - Lysa TerKeurst
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-3 ESV
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Galatians‬ ‭6:9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

July 24, 2018

The past week has been one of the most surreal in my life. The “many emotions of Kathy” are reflected in my recent FB posts. One moment celebrating. One moment reflecting. One moment laughing so hard I was doubled over. The next, sobbing for a few minutes. On behalf of our family, thank you to each person who has prayed for us, laughed and cried with us, and walked with us, just generally following our lead as we navigate new terrain.
Right after I realized I’d been wearing two different shoes all night 👍, I read this quote and it seems so perfect for this particular moment.
If we want to grow in our faith, all it takes is obedience to go where God is leading. That’s it. That’s all - and that is everything.
Obedience doesn’t require perfection on our part. It doesn’t require an understanding of why things are happening, or agreement with the plan. Obedience requires that we are submissive to God’s plan. Even when it’s painful. Knowing that He knows a lot more about the future than we do, and that He has plans for our good, whether the plans seem good to us or not.
“Plans for our good” by God’s definition, aren’t so mundane as to mean “they lived happily ever after.” His plans are about more than this temporary place where we currently reside. His plans last forever, and include a place we can’t begin to comprehend. He is only asking us to trust and obey
“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

July 23, 2018

You know the feeling when something “big” has happened but you don’t remember when you first wake up? Then whatever it is comes back to you - the new reality. That happened to me last week. The morning after our visit to the oncologist, I forgot when I first opened my eyes. Then it came back to me and for a few minutes, I felt fear - fear of the unknown, the future. Fear of things that haven’t happened and things that I can’t control.
Then God reminded me of a phrase my eye doctor had used recently about my torn retina. “For today, it’s good.” And immediately the verse in Matthew 6:34 came to mind: “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”
It’s okay that we don’t know the future. God does. All He wants us to do is to trust Him for this day. There is such an amazing peace in thinking just about today, because we actually LIVE in this day. We SEE the people around us, and FOCUS on the task before us.
I am so thankful for the lessons God has for us. They are right in front of us - and we have a choice to fret about the future or choose joy for today.
Choice made!!

July 22, 2018

Lots of people have asked us how we are coping so well with tough news and the answer is simple:
1) God is in control. We are surrounded by our church family and a body of believers, both locally and literally around the world, who truly care for one another. I could never tag all the people who have reached out, encouraged us and prayed for us!
2) Tony Boyd is amazing and his perspective on situations (“God is not surprised”) has shaped my perspective!
3) Biblical teaching. The message this weekend was the perfect word not only for us, but for anyone in a situation where they are discouraged or tempted to give up. Thank you to our friend and Pastor for an incredible message!

Cancer is back - July 21, 2018

It appears that cancer has returned. Additional testing will happen before we know exactly what is going on. Those are the facts.
However, the TRUTH is that while we were surprised, God is not surprised. He planned my days before I was born and I have no doubt that He knows the future. 🙂
I am feeling good, our family is strong, and we will update in early August when we know more. We appreciate your prayers!
“For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything.” James 1:3–4, NLT

July 21, 2018

Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. Isaiah 41:10 NLT
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 NIV
“Some things we face in life are just plain tough. And with all that is going on in the world today – there actually IS a lot we could potentially worry about. It’s not always easy, but we must make a choice. Choose NOT to allow fear and anxiety to control your life. Guard your heart. Focus your mind on what is truth in the midst of an uncertain world. We may be afraid but we can believe that God is with us. We may not be in control but we can trust the One who is. We may not know the future but we can know the God who does.” Debbie McDaniel

Last fall, I found the sign that T is holding - and it is so applicable for situations we all face! It also fits so well with the verse and devo that I read this morning. I am very thankful for God’s words of wisdom and for the daily reminders that He has it all in control!!
“Waiting. Is there anything harder than being patient? Joyce Meyer said once that ‘Patience is not simply the ability to wait - it's how we behave while we're waiting’.
imagine holding a baby. Perhaps just a few months old. Very aware of being lifted. Very unfamiliar with time. A baby loves being lifted, tossed in the air, and cradled in caring arms. They laugh. They giggle. When you place them back on the floor they look at you with longing eyes. They want to experience that again but don’t know how to ask. They don’t know when. But out of care and joy in your heart, you pick up the child again...
Today you have the opportunity to be lifted up by God as he is mindful of time. He knows your needs, far better than you. He is aware of time, much more than you. He created you. He created time. And he created time to be with you. Turn away from the clock today and focus instead on an encounter with God as he lifts you at the perfect time.” This Seems Impossible devo, You Version
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter‬ ‭5:7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

July 17, 2018

For those times when we think that we know more about our life and our situations than God does, when we think that we are in control - I love the way that God “explains things”!!  🙂
“Have you explored the springs from which the seas come? Have you explored their depths? Do you know where the gates of death are located? Have you seen the gates of utter gloom? Do you realize the extent of the earth? Tell me about it if you know! “Where does light come from, and where does darkness go? Can you take each to its home? Do you know how to get there? But of course you know all this! For you were born before it was all created, and you are so very experienced! “Have you visited the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of hail? (I have reserved them as weapons for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war.) Where is the path to the source of light? Where is the home of the east wind? “Who created a channel for the torrents of rain? Who laid out the path for the lightning? Who makes the rain fall on barren land, in a desert where no one lives? Who sends rain to satisfy the parched ground and make the tender grass spring up? “Does the rain have a father? Who gives birth to the dew? Who is the mother of the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens? For the water turns to ice as hard as rock, and the surface of the water freezes. “Can you direct the movement of the stars— binding the cluster of the Pleiades or loosening the cords of Orion? Can you direct the constellations through the seasons or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens? Do you know the laws of the universe? Can you use them to regulate the earth? “Can you shout to the clouds and make it rain? Can you make lightning appear and cause it to strike as you direct? Who gives intuition to the heart and instinct to the mind? Who is wise enough to count all the clouds? Who can tilt the water jars of heaven when the parched ground is dry and the soil has hardened into clods?” Job‬ ‭38:16-38‬ ‭NLT‬‬
“Then the Lord said to Job, “Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” Job‬ ‭40:1-2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

July 16, 2018

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord GOD is the eternal Rock.” Isaiah‬ ‭26:3-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬
“I love you, Lord; you are my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.” Psalms‬ ‭18:1-2‬ ‭NLT‬‬
“From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me.” Psalms‬ ‭61:2-3‬ ‭NLT‬‬

July 12, 2018

For the days we wonder if God knows where we are and what we are facing:
“GOD, investigate my life; get all the facts firsthand. I’m an open book to you; even from a distance, you know what I’m thinking. You know when I leave and when I get back; I’m never out of your sight. You know everything I’m going to say before I start the first sentence. I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there, too— your reassuring presence, coming and going. This is too much, too wonderful— I can’t take it all in! Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit? to be out of your sight? If I climb to the sky, you’re there! If I go underground, you’re there! If I flew on morning’s wings to the far western horizon, You’d find me in a minute— you’re already there waiting! Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark! At night I’m immersed in the light!” It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you; night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you.” Psalm‬ ‭139:1-12‬ ‭MSG‬‬

July 9, 2018

“The starting point for all happiness is shifting the focus away from yourself. If all you think about is yourself, you’re going to be a pretty miserable person. If you truly want to be happy in life, you have to care about the needs of those around you.
Paul gives Timothy as an example of this in Philippians 2:20-21: “There is no one like Timothy for having a real interest in you; everyone else seems to be worrying about his own plans and not those of Jesus Christ” (LB).
If you want to be one of those rare, unselfish people, you’ve got to change your focus. You have to shift your focus away from yourself to other people. That’s not something that comes naturally, so it’s something you have to learn to do.
I have to admit that it saddens me how many times I have missed the needs of people around me that I love because I wasn’t paying attention. I wasn’t taking an interest in them. I hadn’t shifted the focus from me to the others in the room. Because I wasn’t looking out for their needs, I missed their needs. And that grieves me a lot.
Instead of grieving missed opportunities, be intentional about looking away from yourself and to the needs of others, where you’ll find happiness in serving God through serving others.” - Rick Warren

“Never worry alone. When anxiety grabs my mind, it is self-perpetuating. Worrisome thoughts reproduce faster than rabbits, so one of the most powerful ways to stop the spiral of worry is simply to disclose my worry to a friend... The simple act of reassurance from another human being [becomes] a tool of the Spirit to cast out fear -- because peace and fear are both contagious." - John Ortberg
I love this quote because it talks about the importance of friends to encourage and help us through life’s ups and downs. Here are just some of the people that God has put in our lives in this season - and I am thankful for them!!

A Higher Perspective - June 29, 2018

I was just driving down the street and listening to a sermon; it was so profound I had to stop and write down my thoughts.
The speaker was talking about flying on a commercial plane. He said, “What would happen if, every 15 minutes, you called the flight attendant and asked them to check and make sure the pilots are awake?” After the first few times, they would ignore you because you were basically insulting the pilots. But yet we do that with God.
We commit something to Him but we go back time and time again, or we worry about the situation; we want to make sure He hasn’t gone to sleep, or forgotten, or we wonder why He’s not doing things in our timing or the way we would like.
It was such a clear illustration of something that is foundational to me. I haven’t been able to articulate it this clearly - but this is the “secret sauce” that can change our lives, no matter the situation. It goes along so well with the concept that God is not surprised at our situation. He is aware of what we are going through and He has plans to use our lives for good and for His Glory! That is what makes it easier to cope with whatever comes our way.
For me - it is my eyes. They are calming down (less flashes and floaters!) but from what I understand, the issues with my eyes will not go away. The injections slow the process down, but there is no guarantee or even really a plan that my vision will improve. And it’s certainly not the most horrible thing that can happen to someone!! My life is so good, I am thankful for the wonderful people in our lives, and I couldn’t have a better medical team! But it is very difficult to recognize people - so if I have a “deer in the headlights” look when I see you, it’s not you; it is me trying to process what I see! 🙂
This is The Message translation - and I think it clearly states that God has a plan and can use whatever we are dealing with, for good. He loves us and wants what is best for us. We can trust Him.
“Because of the extravagance of those revelations, and so I wouldn’t get a big head, I was given the gift of a handicap to keep me in constant touch with my limitations. Satan’s angel did his best to get me down; what he in fact did was push me to my knees. No danger then of walking around high and mighty! At first I didn’t think of it as a gift, and begged God to remove it. Three times I did that, and then he told me, My grace is enough; it’s all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness. Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ’s strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size—abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become.”

“Your pain often reveals God’s purpose for you. God never wastes a hurt! If you’ve gone through a hurt, he wants you to help other people going through that same hurt. He wants you to share it. God can use the problems in your life to give you a ministry to others. In fact, the very thing you’re most ashamed of in your life and resent the most could become your greatest ministry in helping other people.” Rick Warren
“He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭1:4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I was blind, now I'm seeing in color
I was dead, now I'm living forever
I had failed, but you were my redeemer
I've been blessed beyond all measure
I was lost, now I'm found by the father
I've been changed from a ruin to treasure
I've been given a hope and a future
I've been blessed beyond all measure
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Letting go and trusting when I cannot see
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Surely every season you are good to me
Oh, you are good to me
Oh, you are good to me
You were there in the valley of shadows
You were there in the depth of my sorrows
You're my strength, my hope for tomorrow
I've been blessed beyond all measure
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Letting go and trusting when I cannot see
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Surely every season you are good to me
Oh, you are good to me
Oh, you are good to me
Surely your goodness pursues me
Surely your heart is still for me
I will remember your mercies all my days
Through every storm and gale
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Letting go and trusting when I cannot see
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Surely every season you are good to me

“He’s the one who comforts us in all our trouble so that we can comfort other people who are in every kind of trouble. We offer the same comfort that we ourselves received from God.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭1:4‬ ‭CEB‬‬
We seem to have it all backwards when it comes to being strong and handling things. We think that trouble or weakness is something to be avoided. But when troubles come, we gain an understanding of the character of God, and a peace to trust in Him, that we would never learn except by going through the trial.
We can trust in His plan!

Kathy’s brain: We have a Target gift card. Let’s go look around the store, walking down every aisle to see what we can get!
Tony’s brain: We have a Target gift card. I wish Kathy hadn’t come along. We must hurry into the store and buy multiples of one item and get out of the store ASAP!!
He won. 😂😂
Then I suggested we run by Hobby Lobby (for one item). You could feel him cringe. I told him that I could go to Hobby Lobby later, that it wasn’t an emergency. 😂

"For Today, It's Good" - June 16, 2018

“For today, it’s good.”
I had an eye injection on Thursday - all good. But I woke up on Friday with indicators of another tear in my retina. Off to the eye specialist who said, “For today, it’s good.” Then he gave me a list of things to watch for this weekend, said to call if anything changes, and scheduled me to come back next week so he can see how things are looking in my retina.
As yesterday unfolded, it felt like things were falling apart all around us. A newborn baby having a difficult time after surgery; friends being admitted to the hospital; upcoming appointments for friends and family who are waiting for news, uncertain of what next steps will look like in their lives.
It FELT like things were falling apart - but feelings are not accurate indicators of the truth of situations! What we can see is not always a clear picture of what God is doing. I’ve never felt that the words of these familiar verses have been more applicable, and I have never understood them so clearly, as I do today.
“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” Matthew 6:34
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah‬ ‭29:11‬ ‭
“For today, it’s good.” Sometimes even “For this moment, it’s good.” Most of us rush past this moment, this day, trying to figure out what’s ahead. But God is saying to live, appreciate, take in THIS day. That He is enough for any situation. And to trust His character and His plan for tomorrow.

The words below were written by a mother who lost her sweet daughter to cancer. I never had a true “heart knowledge” of what she is saying until our family’s journey with Tucker’s heart began. That journey unlocked another dimension to life; one that has included pain, but it is, above all, a deeper, richer trust in the character of God. Her words are profound:
“I've found that in great suffering you learn whether or not your beliefs have base. Whether the words you spout to another who has hurt will ring true in your ears when you are in pain or whether you will find that your tongue only speaks pretty jibberish and your heart is numb. I have found that the words I have read and the beliefs that I have imagined myself to be trusting on are as solid as the rocks I walk across.
The Word of God is neither frivolous nor meandering and it is the very faith that I have in each vowel and consonant that God has put forth that has kept this walking wounded mother from despair. Only this trust. Only this. Only.” - S. Needham

“This is the kind of life you’ve been invited into, the kind of life Christ lived. He suffered everything that came his way so you would know that it could be done, and also know how to do it, step-by-step. He never did one thing wrong, Not once said anything amiss. They called him every name in the book and he said nothing back. He suffered in silence, content to let God set things right. He used his servant body to carry our sins to the Cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way. His wounds became your healing. You were lost sheep with no idea who you were or where you were going. Now you’re named and kept for good by the Shepherd of your souls.” 1 Peter‬ ‭2:21-25‬ ‭MSG‬‬
We can become so indignant when we think something isn’t fair, that we don’t deserve the treatment that we receive. But the example that Jesus set for us - Jesus, who did nothing wrong, who truly didn’t deserve the treatment he received, is sobering. It’s not about fair or unfair treatment - it’s about living a life that shows God’s love and grace, despite our circumstances.
