I had an eye doctor appointment in Memphis. Tony drove me there because my car is in the shop. After they scanned my eyes and did a retinal exam, the doctor said, “How about getting an injection today with a different medicine?” Normally they do three monthly injections, take a month off and just do an exam, and start a series of three more injections a couple of weeks later.
I was surprised; I did have plans that had to change, but it was all okay. The day was beautiful (I took pictures from the waiting room), Tony was with me so I didn’t have to drive home from Memphis with dilated, injected eyes. I’d been very tired this morning when I woke up; my eyes were sore by the time I got home, so I went to bed. The unplanned rest was what I needed! I am thankful that God knows what we need and uses all things for good (even eye injections!).
Tonight, I read the devo and scripture for the day. So perfect. Gratitude, rather than bitterness or anger over our circumstances, is good medicine!
Note: I don’t want to give the impression that I have “mastered” this because I haven’t! But I am finding that life is so much more fun when I look for things to be grateful for.
“Gratitude doesn’t come naturally. Self-pity does. Bellyaches do. Grumbles and mumbles—no one has to remind us to offer them. Yet they don’t mix well with the kindness that we have been given. A spoonful of gratitude is all we need. Joseph took more than a spoonful. He had cause to be ungrateful. Abandoned. Enslaved. Betrayed. Estranged. Yet try as we might to find tinges of bitterness, we don’t succeed. What we do discover, however, are two dramatic gestures of gratitude.” Max Lucado, God Will Carry You Through
“During this time, before the first of the famine years, two sons were born to Joseph and his wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On. Joseph named his older son Manasseh, for he said, “God has made me forget all my troubles and everyone in my father’s family.” Joseph named his second son Ephraim, for he said, “God has made me fruitful in this land of my grief.” Genesis 41:50-52 NLT
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” Psalms 118:29 NLT
